Pre-Season Outlook
Drafted in the sixth round in 2023, Evans looks the part of a lead back in the NFL and shows adequate speed and burst, but he did little as a rookie with his rare opportunities. Evans had trouble staying healthy and holding onto the ball in college, and he hasn't shown much vision or aptitude for using his blocking effectively. The Rams added Blake Corum in the third round of the 2024 Draft and signed Boston Scott to bolster the backfield depth behind Kyren Williams, but Evans' potential could keep him on the roster.

Ineffective in limited action
Evans finished the 2023 regular season with nine rush attempts for 19 yards.
Analysis: Despite the abundance of running backs that went through the Rams' roster over the course of the season -- Cam Akers, Kyren Williams, Ronnie Rivers, Royce Freeman, Darrell Henderson, Myles Gaskin, and Evans all logged playing time in 2023 for the Rams -- Evans managed to hold his roster spot despite performing inadequately when called upon. Head coach Sean McVay clearly sees potential in the rookie by keeping him on the active roster despite his lackluster performance, but with Williams…read more

Healthy scratch
Evans (coach's decision) is inactive ahead of Sunday's game against the Giants, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: The rookie running back out of Ole Miss is a healthy scratch for the second consecutive week, seemingly falling down Los Angeles' depth chart. Royce Freeman and Ronnie Rivers will assume the Rams' reserve RB duties, and Evans' next opportunity to suit up will come in Week 18 against the 49ers.

Just six yards in victory
Evans rushed three times for six yards during Sunday's 37-14 victory against the Cardinals.
Analysis: Evans managed to keep his spot on the roster over Darrell Henderson with Kyren Williams returning, but Evans' touches once again were uninspiring, and for the year he has a paltry 16 yards rushing on eight attempts. His three rushing attempts were also his only three snaps taken in the game, a far cry from the 41 of Williams and 23 of Royce Freeman. Evans will continue to be the tertiary option in the run game for the Rams barring a few injuries, and a matchup against a stout Browns defense…read more

Healthy scratch against Cowboys
Evans (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
Analysis: When Kyren Williams (ankle) and Ronnie Rivers (knee) went down, it was expected that Evans would see an expanded role in the backfield. Instead, he played zero offensive snaps in Week 7 and is now a healthy scratch. Darrell Henderson and Royce Freeman figure to be the primary running backs, while Myles Gaskin will join them among active players in what will likely be a special-teams-centric role.

No offensive snaps
Evans took four snaps on special teams during Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Steelers.
Analysis: The Rams chose to lean on Royce Freeman (12-66-0) and Darrell Henderson (18-61-1) to spearhead the rushing attack, while Evans made only a few appearances on special teams and never saw a snap on offense. The sixth-round rookie will likely have even more competition for playing time next week, as Myles Gaskin, who just signed with the Rams on Tuesday, was inactive against Pittsburgh. It's hard to see a viable role in the short term for Evans with the glut of backs added to the roster, and a…read more

Looks set to remain backup Week 7
Evans is expected to serve as a backup option behind Royce Freeman and Darrell Henderson in Sunday's game against the Steelers, sources tell Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Analysis: While he was active for just the second time all season in last week's win over the Cardinals, Evans picked up his first NFL carries late in the contest once Kyren Williams (ankle) and Ronnie Rivers (knee) went down with injuries. Even though Williams and Rivers have since been moved to injured reserve and are set to miss at least the Rams' next four games, Evans doesn't look like he'll be in line to climb to the top of the depth chart, as the Rams reportedly believe the rookie sixth-round pick…read more

Could get starting nod Week 7
Evans appears to be first in line to serve as the Rams' starting running back Sunday against the Steelers with Kyren Williams (ankle) and Ronnie Rivers (knee) trending toward multi-game absences, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports. "Obviously you saw Zach Evans get the first carries [after Williams and Rivers exited Sunday's 26-9 win over the Cardinals]," McVay said Monday. "We've got Royce Freeman on our practice squad, and there'll be some different things that we're in the midst of working through right now."
Analysis: The Rams have since signed Freeman to the roster and also re-signed Darrell Henderson -- who appeared in 50 games with the team from 2019 through 2022 -- to replace Freeman on the practice squad. Additionally, the Rams signed Myles Gaskin off the Vikings' practice squad, leaving him, Evans and Freeman as the team's likely backfield options for at least Week 7. Gaskin and Freeman both have more extensive NFL experience than Evans, a sixth-round pick out of Ole Miss, but the rookie was active for…read more

Could be in line for more work
With Kyren Williams (ankle) and Ronnie Rivers (knee) battling injuries, Evans could be in line for an increased role Sunday against the Steelers.
Analysis: Williams is expected to miss Week 7, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, while Rivers is reportedly battling a sprained PCL. Evans was a sixth-round pick by the Rams in the 2023 Draft but has played just six offensive snaps, all of which came Week 6 against Arizona when Evans rushed four times for 10 yards in relief. Royce Freeman is on the Rams' practice squad and would likely be elevated should Williams and Rivers sit. Both backs figure to be popular waiver-wire pickups in fantasy this week.

Stays on sidelines
Evans (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Colts, Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: Evans has yet to suit up this season, as the team opts to continue to role with the veteran Royce Freeman as its No. 3 running back behind Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers. The rookie running back's next chance to suit up will be in Week 5 against the Eagles.

Inactive again Monday
Evans (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Monday in Cincinnati, Stu Jackson of the Ram's official site reports.
Analysis: Evans, a 2023 sixth-round pick, now will kick off his career with three consecutive healthy scratches. With Cam Akers dealt from Los Angeles to Minnesota last week, the Rams will continue to roll with Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers out of the backfield, while Royce Freeman will be available in case of emergency and on special teams. Evans' next chance to make his pro debut is Sunday at Indianapolis.

Not playing Sunday
Evans (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the 49ers.
Analysis: Evans' debut will still have to wait despite Cam Akers being a healthy scratch for Week 2. Instead, Royce Freeman will get the call as the team's No. 3 running back behind Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers.

Won't make debut
Evans (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Seahawks.
Analysis: Evans was able to make the team as the No. 4 running back after getting selected in the sixth round of the 2023 Draft. However, the Ole Miss product will stay on the sidelines Week 1 against Seattle.

Kept on initial roster
Evans has a spot on the Rams' initial 53-man roster, Stu Jackson of the official team website reports.
Analysis: Evans is one of four running backs, joined by Cam Akers, Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers. It looks like Evans and Rivers are competing for the No. 3 job, which might mostly entail snaps on special teams to start the season. In any case, Akers remains the lead runner, and Williams seems to have locked down the second spot on the depth chart.

Modest showing in preseason loss
Evans rushed seven times for 23 yards and brought in his only target for six yards in the Rams' 41-0 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday night.
Analysis: Evans worked in behind Ronnie Rivers and Royce Freeman, garnering his first touch in the third quarter. The rookie sixth-round pick had an unremarkable preseason that saw him net just 77 yards on 23 carries while also recording a pair of receptions for 13 yards. Whether that's enough to make the active roster remains to be seen, considering Rivers seemingly outperformed him, and Cam Akers and Kyren Williams are already locked into the top two spots on the depth chart.

Garners 27 total yards Saturday
Evans rushed eight times for 20 yards and brought in his only target for seven yards during the Rams' 34-17 preseason loss to the Raiders on Saturday night.
Analysis: Evans didn't log his first carry until the third quarter but finished just one rush attempt behind backfield mate Ronnie Rivers, who set the pace in that category. The rookie sixth-round pick was more productive on a per-carry basis during his pro debut against the Chargers last week, but Evans appears to have a solid shot of securing a practice squad spot at minimum with his cumulative body of work going into next Saturday night's preseason finale versus the Broncos.

Spearheads ground attack Saturday
Evans rushed eight times for 34 yards in the Rams' 34-17 preseason loss to the Chargers on Saturday night.
Analysis: The rookie sixth-round pick was the second running back for the Rams to log a touch behind the player that might be his primary competition for a roster spot, Ronnie Rivers. Evans finished with a team-high rushing yardage total, but he logged just three more yards than Rivers on two additional carries. Rivers is also capable of filling a returner role, so Evans will have to continue making a convincing case during next Saturday night's home preseason matchup against the Raiders.
